The legend of the Jack-o-lantern

So I got into a little in-house contest in Atomic Cartoons, and the subject was Jack-o-lantern. I had seen the images of the guy with a pumpkin for a head, but had no idea what it stood for or what was the story behind the traditional image.

So I did a little digging online and read that the legend is based on the story of Stringy Jack, who tricked the Devil into climbing a tree while he was being seduced into giving up his soul. He then carved a cross onto the tree so the Devil couldn't come back down until he promised to leave Jack alone and never take his soul. So he got the promise he wanted and let the demon go. He got what he wanted, until he died. God didn't accept his soul since he had dealings with the Devil, and then was rejected in Hell, since the Devil had vowed not to take his soul, so he was forced to roam the Earth forever, using a lantern made out of carved turnip to light his path.

Such a cool story, right? Well, here's Stringy Jack, who then became Jack of the Lantern when the Irish told the tale, then just Jack-o-lantern.
